Sorting waste in the workplace, a requirement and a source of savings
Since 2016 and the ‘5 types of waste‘ decree, most businesses are required to sort their waste into paper, metal, plastic, glass and wood. Only local authorities that do not exceed the weekly threshold of 1,100 litres of collected waste are exempt from this requirement. Failure to comply with the ‘5 types of waste‘ sorting requirements may result in administrative sanctions, including up to two years of imprisonment and a fine of €75,000. They can even extend to the closure of your establishment. For legal entities, this criminal sanction can be multiplied by five in the event of non-compliance.
You must therefore provide sorting bins in your premises to ensure the separate collection of your company’s waste. Depending on the sorting and recovery services offered by your waste collection provider, you can choose to keep certain of these 5 streams mixed, as long as they are isolated from other types of waste (such as food waste, for example). Your waste is then sent to a recovery centre that completes and finalises the sorting already carried out. Depending on the quality of waste collection in your offices, you can negotiate lower service fees with your waste collection provider. Ensuring selective waste collection in your company is not only mandatory but also a way to reduce your operating costs.
Equipping yourself properly to encourage good selective sorting habits in the office
The type of equipment (containers, bins, sorting bins, columns, etc.) you choose for your premises has a significant impact on behaviour regarding waste sorting. The entire Naturen range has been designed to optimise sorting, with clear and easily understandable sorting instructions. Organising your workspaces around clearly marked collecting points is a first step in encouraging employees to adopt the right practices for recycling and waste recovery.
Understanding selective sorting signage in the workplace
Actions are multiplying in companies to promote selective sorting and, more broadly, sustainable development. Although there is still some disparity in the sorting instructions and bin colours across different regions in France, a national reference framework has been established by the Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (Ademe). Regarding the colour of containers and drop-off points, here is what has been recommended by Ademe, in line with the anti-waste law for a circular economy:
- Blue bin for paper and brochures.
- Yellow bin for plastics, metals, cartons and paper in the absence of a blue bin.
- Brown bin for biodegradable waste and food waste.
- Grey bin for residual waste.
Customising sorting bins in the workplace
The elegant Naturen sorting stations integrate seamlessly as full-fledged decorative elements. The work environment you operate in should be as pleasant as possible. This involves waste collection installations that are as seamlessly integrated as possible, harmonised to the maximum with the rest of the spaces. Naturen has designed its sorting bins and allows you to fully customise their appearance. We manufacture your columns based on the designs you provide (RAL, Pantone). As a result, your office waste bins have an aesthetic that perfectly harmonises with your surfaces and helps encourage your staffs compliance with waste sorting.
Encouraging the right sorting habits in the company
How to engage employees in sorting waste within the company ? While environmental protection is an increasingly shared concern, it’s not always easy to involve all employees in waste reduction and sorting. To achieve buy-in and changes in individual behaviours, various awareness actions are possible: presenting and distributing materials about the different sorting bins set up in the company and their colour codes, posters, emails, presenting environmental challenges through quizzes or tests, etc. Don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your company’s waste sorting issues !
